I could not stop myself to start reading this book the moment it was delivered at my home as I was eagerly waiting. Earlier to this one day it struck to my mind to pick some book on life time experiences this time and should learn from other’s experiences. In first two chapters life had been described so smooth that there was nothing to italicize. Chapter like “posting in Orissa” found interesting but with full of boasting. Nothing remarkable explanation on how he dealt with problems. Contradictory statements are made very often in the book such as in one incident “…..my father sent generous supplies of coffee and oranges to the headmaster and that proved to be a major factor in ensuring that I was promoted to the next class.” And in another incident while entering in college when he was advised to file false affidavit of increased age he wrote “….. my father was firm believer in the truth and it was against his nature to file a false affidavit” Apart from minor incidents nothing substantial is discussed. Or I would say expectation was far more from an official who had been on such high and mighty posts. It is not unusual to get many problems which test your substance daily. And not a single one could make a place here. There is nothing to match with the title of the book. Most of the space is occupied by postings and personal achievements in tournaments etc. One thought clicked if his working also had the same double standards like title and matter of the book!!!! Few tricks author revealed while quoting incidents like how he got favour to park his car or purpose behind creation of special hospitality fund. But both the incidents smelled obnoxious for the purpose they served. Acceptability for such things, brings one’s integrity under doubt. Again how writer used his rank to get changed the allotted plot makes book unbearable . The difference between literary and administrative person , in describing things with depth and art, is felt. English is with all its beauty and toughness like - “slogged hard”. Book is with fabulous printing ,having good diction but without substance.
